2018. Funded by MIUR (Ministry of Education, University and Research), OGS - National Institute of Oceanography and Applied Geophysics bought the Icebreaker Ernest Shackleton, now R/V Laura Bassi. By a joint agreement and partnership between OGS, ENEA (responsible for the implementation of Italian Antarctic expeditions) and CNR - National Research Council of Italy (responsible for the National Antarctic Research Program - PNRA), the vessel was included in the strategic planning of the PNRA and an equipment upgrade (acoustic instruments included) was funded and planned in 2021.
The Laura Bassi inherited Teams and Knowledge in Logistic and Marine Research developed during pervious PNRA Italian Antarctic Surveys (R/V Italica & OGS Explora).

2021. Laura Bassi Full Refitting: Between May and July 2021 the Vessel underwent several upgradeds improving research capabilities, above all other had been equipped with Kongsberg Acoustic Instruments (EM 304, EM 2040, TOPAS, ADCP, EK80).
